Hey everyone!  Life has its little bumps in the road and something extraordinary is always happening in God's world.  Dale is celebrating his wedding anniversary and Nic is getting ready to say goodbye to one home and move into another.  The last thing we want to do is leave our audience hanging, so here is a fond memory to tide you over until we return.  Consider this our All-Star break!  The following episode is our most popular, so we thought it was worth re-visiting for anyone who might have missed it.  See you soon!

Meanwhile, we change lanes to untangle the web of worship music versus contemporary Christian tunes. What's the real difference, and does it matter if Montel Williams or Montel Jordan makes a surprise cameo in our memories? By dissecting songs like "Shake Heaven," we reflect on how music that stirs the spirit may not always suit a traditional Sunday service. Personal anecdotes and humorous mix-ups guide our exploration, all while we appreciate how platforms like Buzzsprout help us keep our podcast episodes neatly organized.

As we journey through our favorite worship and gospel music, we savor the profound emotional connections forged by songs from "Oceans" to "Spirit in the Sky." A blend of nostalgia and humor paints our musical memories, celebrating artists like Elvis and Johnny Cash. The unexpected inclusion of "Good, Good Father" in a church service becomes a symbol of worship's spontaneous essence. Join us in this episode, where music's storytelling power brings shared cultural moments to life, and we share tips on remembering life's important dates with creative associations.

Post-Election Political Analysis and Speculation

Speaker 1

Okay .

Speaker 2

Okay , it's changed .

Speaker 1

Next Wednesday is the 13th at 8 . Safe Okay , wait , okay .

Speaker 3

There's so much technical stuff . You guys didn't catch it , but last week I accidentally scheduled one of the episodes to go out . Yeah , last week , yeah .

Speaker 1

I went home and did the one . You scheduled one .

Speaker 3

That went out on Wednesday night yeah .

Speaker 3

Then I scheduled the second episode that we recorded . Yes , like the following day . Well , I thought I scheduled it for tonight , but somehow managed to schedule it for the wrong day . Now , I didn't schedule the podcast , like the on Buzzsprout . I didn't schedule that , I only scheduled the Facebook post that went out . But because you had the link , you could access it . So Sid texted me . She's like hey , did you mean to do that ? So we're immediately scrambling to take this thing down . So I was like we're a week ahead .

Speaker 1

We can't afford that . No , I'm like I'm pretty sure he didn't mean to do that . Yeah , definitely did not .

Speaker 3

Definitely did not . So we started , we were just talking like election and life and all of the crazy things that happened last night . But I will tell you I I was thoroughly surprised by the entire election last night . I really was .

Speaker 4

I really was To see the extreme in the voting . Yeah , they likened it to Reagan . Yes , very much so Very much so it hadn't been that red across the board .

Speaker 3

Yeah , because I mean honestly , it stopped at Pennsylvania all the way over to what Wisconsin Kamala won Wisconsin , honestly , it stopped at Pennsylvania all the way over to what Wisconsin Kamala won Wisconsin no didn't . No . What did she win ? She won something Minnesota , minnesota .

Speaker 4

I thought he was going to take that .

Speaker 3

I did too , minnesota , and then creep over to , like California and like Oregon , a couple of those western like yeah , she just goes up the coast , but otherwise Oregon , a couple of those Western like , but otherwise like it was pretty well red , red .

Speaker 4

Yeah , the big topic of discussion was that blue wall falling between .

Speaker 1

Wisconsin , michigan , yep , which is that ? The Rust Belt ? Yes , Okay .

Speaker 3

Well , and the crazy part was so swing states are always the conversation , right . So what did we have ? Ohio used to be a swing state , not a swing state anymore .

Speaker 1

Right Like it's . I was trying to explain that to Chase last night because he doesn't get into it it used to say .

Speaker 3

the saying used to be where Ohio goes , so shall the country , but that's not the case anymore because it's so conservative . But anyhow so , pennsylvania , north Carolina .

Speaker 4

Virginia . I believe Virginia is the only southern state . Yes , she did get Virginia .

Speaker 3

But it wasn't a swing state . It wasn't considered a swing state Michigan , Wisconsin .

Speaker 4

Is Iowa a swing state ?

Speaker 3

Hold on let me just look Because I want to get it right , but what I wanted to say , the point that I was going to make , is that it was wild to see that she didn't take any of the swing states . So here's the battleground states , or what they call them , on the Associated Press Georgia , north Carolina , florida , maine . She got .

Speaker 5

Maine , she got Maine .

Speaker 3

Well , okay , but Donald Trump got some of the Maine votes because of the way that they break their votes . He technically won the popular vote 52% .

Speaker 4

Yes .

Speaker 3

Okay way that they break their votes . He technically won the popular vote 52 . Yes , okay , uh , pennsylvania , arizona , michigan , is that it , they say , nebraska , arizona I think it's still open .

Speaker 3

Yeah , I'm not surprised , but it doesn't matter at this point because it's 51-46 , with 85% of the votes in . Come on , let it go , come on . But anyhow , I was just really I was thoroughly surprised with how many of the swing states that went red and the amount of money that they spent . Now , this is just one thing that I'd like to point out for those of us who aren't political but just like logically minded . The money that they spent in that campaign , imagine the good we could have done in the world with that money .

Speaker 1

And I think they spent the most in Ohio .

Speaker 3

Yeah Well , they said that the Senate race between Bernie Moreno and Sherrod Brown was the most expensive in history for a non-presidential race .

Speaker 2

Yeah , wow .

Speaker 3

Can you imagine the money that they spent ? And , let's be honest , we all saw the commercials , we all got the text messages and the emails . Yeah , but there was more money spent on those races than had really ever been spent before .

Speaker 4

Well , think about what her campaign was 104 days . Yes , that's it .

Speaker 3

Yeah , but the war chest that she had from inheriting it from the biden camp well , and that's what they said today .

Speaker 1

They're like are they allowed to do ?

Speaker 4

that I don't , I guess , so she did , and she didn't go to prison , so I never thought of that she got biden's um his what they called the war chest , his .

Speaker 1

All of his funds from his campaign were transferred those yeah they were kind of saying that , um , I think they were asking democrats what do you think we would regret , you know ? And they're like , basically Biden not stepping down sooner ?

Speaker 3

So there's a couple of things and I will tell you just from having talked to lots of Democrats and again , I've told you I run fairly conservative , but I love to have a good conversation with with Democrats , people who are not , who don't think like me . One of the first conversations that I had was they didn't vote for Kamala . They wouldn't tell me who they did vote for , so whether they went independent or whatever , but they didn't vote for Kamala . Maybe they wrote in Bernie Sanders , I don't know , but they said because they didn't get to pick their nominee , there was no way they were going to vote for it .

Speaker 3

They they voted in the primary for Biden . For him to step down and then not to get a say again was not fair , they felt like it was it , I agree .

Speaker 3

It was a bait and switch , because they didn't think that she could have gotten it on her own merit , and so they felt that's how they felt about it . Now , if I'm talking to a Democrat and they're saying that to me , right , I can imagine how a lot of people may have felt that way , and , especially now that they've lost in the grandiose way that they have , how insulting that would feel to your intelligence . I don't feel like I'm a dumb person , and if you told me , ok , trump is running , and then all of a sudden , trump drops out and it's JD or I mean anybody- mike pence steps in like whatever I would be like .

Speaker 3

Uh , this isn't what I we had talked about .

Speaker 4

I've made an agreement and now I'm being forced to take something else , so I can imagine how and how upsetting that would feel yeah , but for me , though my takeaway is , with the democratic party especially is they had to know there were doubts about biden's abilities , well , to continue on another term . There had to know there were doubts about Biden's abilities to continue on another term . There had to be doubt .

Speaker 3

Have I not told you about my wife's lady ? Have I told you guys about her ? So my wife follows a lady on .

Speaker 1

You told us about her following her .

Speaker 3

Okay , so she she knew she , like she , has what they call a sub stack . I don't know what a sub stack is , I have no idea , but my wife gets it and my wife reads them to me . Okay , is it just like a weekly ? She is . She is some lady who is an armchair expert . She listens to all these radio podcasts and she follows politics really closely and she just hears stuff , she learns things . And she knew three weeks prior to Biden stepping down that Biden would be stepping down .

Speaker 3

When there was an interview with Barack Obama and Barack did not directly support a second Biden term , like he didn't come out and say Biden's got it together , biden's going to be fine . He didn't say that the wheel started to turn and within a week of that she had pretty well deduced that Biden was planning to step down . They were already meeting at Camp David with the family . The family was there . They were conversing about what this would look like if he decided not to run . Yada , yada , yada . His speech is written . He will resign or he will .

Speaker 3

I don't remember the word that she used . It was not resign , he would Resign , no , I don't remember the word that she used . But he would do it on the following Sunday , like I'm talking to a T , and when it happened I screenshot it and sent it to my wife and I said this lady is crazy , she knows everything . I'm convinced that the doorman at the White House is her source , because she knows everything that's happening inside of the White House before it ever happens . The cocaine she was talking about that before anybody else was talking about it . They knew , they certainly knew . Obama knew , kamala knew , they all knew that he was never going to run that it was never actually when the media turned on him .

Speaker 4

Right here we go .

Speaker 3

It's going to happen right and he didn't have a chance at that point and I feel bad for the guy because we set him .

Speaker 6

They set him up to fail .

Speaker 4

Correct , if , if you let , and I think they set kamala up to fail . I agree with that . If I was her , I'd be , I think , a little bit upset yeah , maybe I'd be a republican now I don't know , and that was what I was gonna say . My takeaway is okay . Now , if you're the democratic party , especially , who do you have up and coming like they're going to have to reorganize ?

Speaker 3

that whole party .

Speaker 4

That whole thing's going to be a shake-up , and I think also there could be a case where that party is now going to be split in many cases , because well , Well , you see people defecting constantly . Everything that she was running on , it's clear that that's not what the country wanted .

Speaker 2

Right .

Speaker 4

So now the Democrats I don't think can run on that platform in four years and win it , so they're going to have to come back the other way .

Speaker 3

Here's what's crazy is it was a pendulum swing , in my opinion . So there was this ultra liberal move , there was this ultra liberal move , there was this ultra conservative move , right , and we were opposite ends like no abortions , everybody should be able to get abortions , Term limits , no term limits . It's never really been like that Correct . We have never been so so far divided . And what was interesting is she tried to swing to the middle and say well , I feel like we could come together . And while I don't disagree with her , I will say that I completely agreed with that idea that we should be able to come to the table . It was too little , too late , yeah .

Speaker 3

Do you know what I mean ? Yeah , and then I realized after watching those votes like watching that the map turns over and all of that , like they gain Senate seats there . So they're going to have the House , they're going to have , likely have the House , it's not counted yet . They're going to have the Senate , they're going to have the executive branch and , really honestly , the judicial branch is stacked . At this point they have all three branches of government . They have like literally all of the governing power . I said this to Beth , I've said this to Roger tonight . They better get some crap done . Yeah , they have no excuses .

Speaker 4

I don't want to hear you know .

Speaker 3

Trump told us he would end that war in Ukraine . He better walk into that office before he gets back .

Speaker 3

That's what I'm saying Like he better find a way to end that war in Ukraine , because if he doesn't do that , what's going to happen is the Republicans aren't going to trust him anymore and then there's going to be a complete like break off of like . Ok , he said he could do it , but he really can't . And also , I want to just say this for everybody sitting in the room and everybody who's listening everybody sitting in the room and everybody who's listening the president has nothing to do with the economy .

Speaker 1

No .

Speaker 3

They are sitting in a good place at a good time or a bad place at a bad time . They don't create jobs Now . Their policies help , but they don't pass laws . They sign laws . They sign the law into action . They enforce the law .

Speaker 4

I think sometimes they influence how small businesses behave .

Speaker 3

I don't disagree with that .

Speaker 1

Yeah , I'm not saying that they don't to some degree , but they don't create the jobs . Well , and I think I truly think this is just me saying this , but I do believe there were a lot of people voting this year that thought what you just said , that they do control .

Speaker 3

I know that . That's what I'm saying .

Speaker 1

And for that I do strongly believe that someone , everyone needs to take a citizen's test when they register to vote , and maybe every 10 years or so , just to realize what the democracy is .

Speaker 3

Because the job of the president is actually so small . Yeah , intentionally , because they don't want one person .

Speaker 3

They don't want a king or queen again . You know what I mean . So it's actually purposely small . But we look at that as the figurehead of what I mean . So it's actually purposely small . But we look at that as the figurehead of the country , like it's the power point . Yeah , so whatever congress does and they sign or whatever , like job creations come and don't get me wrong , the dow is up like 1400 points today . Yeah so , like they do , like , but it's because of the policies people assume that they're going to create right , yeah and let's be honest , Eggs aren't coming back down .

Speaker 3

Milk's not coming back down Because retailers have figured out we'll pay for it and they're not going to bring it . Gas didn't go back to 99 cents a gallon y'all .

Speaker 4

I think it will go down .

Speaker 3

It's going to go down , but it's not going to Because we're going to open pipelines . That makes sense . To go down to 99 cents a gallon , no Like inflation is what it is and it exists at this point , so it just is going to be—all right , that had nothing to do with our topic tonight . I feel like we've just talked for 12 minutes about politics . If you're still with us , and I hope you are .

Exploring Worship vs. Christian Music

Speaker 3

Tonight's topic top five favorite worship or hymnals hymns and I'm specifying particularly because I don't want to talk about Christian music .

Speaker 1

Right .

Speaker 3

There's a difference . Yeah , we've talked about this before . So , like Shake Heaven , anybody ever heard Shake Heaven ? Dale loves Shake . Heaven oh yeah , I wish I had it . I would just play it for you .

Speaker 5

Have you guys heard Shake Heaven ?

Speaker 3

I haven't heard it . I would just play it for you . Have you guys heard Shake Heaven ? I haven't heard it . Okay , You've got to find it . Well , I can't play it though .

Speaker 1

Can we play it on your phone ? Yeah , hold on . I mean it won't be for me , but it'll be something , Hold on .

Speaker 3

Yeah , I'll hold it up to the mic . Yeah , covered this in an early episode , like three seasons ago or two seasons ago or whatever . How many seasons we on this is two this is two .

Speaker 1

This is that's it late . Two , do you know ? Do you know ? We have almost 100 episodes posted . It's nuts , it's nuts . We do our um seasons like differently compared to others . Yeah , and I'll tell you this at some point .

Speaker 3

Sid , this is your fault , not mine . By the way , we have to go through and we have to put the season and the episode in there , because we don't always so some of them have a season in an episode I noticed that last , like , I think , when I was texting you yeah but I think whenever we started using buzzsprout . No , we didn't do it before .

Speaker 1

We didn't have the option to give it a season and uh I did already go through that though oh but what I was about to say with the AI GPT yes , so then last week I went through like I think there's seven of them maybe gotcha seven , so so are we caught up yeah , I mean on buzzsprout . We are . I don't know if it references back to the rest it does , yeah , it pushes back .

Speaker 2

All right here . It is sounds like a video game . Yeah , right , okay .

Speaker 3

Okay , we need to get to the chorus . Are you ready ?

Speaker 2

now Get ready , now Get ready , let's go shouting out . Let's go shouting out . Gonna shake heaven , gonna shake heaven .

Speaker 3

Joining together Dale Walker's loving this right now .

Speaker 6

I have not heard that . I haven't either .

Speaker 3

Okay , here's my point . That is a great Christian song . It is not a worship song . It doesn't fit in a worship set list . That's not something you do on a Sunday morning , although .

Speaker 1

I think we have , we have .

Speaker 3

Well , yeah , florence used to play it all the time , but that was one of those growth moments for us when we realized that there was . It was like a mind blowing moment when we realized there was a huge difference . I believe hymns were always intended to be a spiritual uplifting . That is a much different experience . Does that make sense ? Like you would go to a concert and hear that song right , montel williams is his name . Like he'd be dancing around a stage singing shake heaven .

Speaker 4

And I just see Montel from the talk show . Yeah , yeah , that's Montel Jordan . Oh , okay , there's a different , it's a different .

Speaker 1

Montel , it's a different .

Speaker 3

Montel . I don't think it's the same guy , uh , but my point is there is a difference , and so I want to make sure that , and I'll be honest , this is a real peeves

Discussion on Worship Songs and Hymns

Speaker 3

. Oh , that old Mercy Me song , what is it ?

Speaker 6

I can only imagine .

Speaker 3

I can only imagine it's not a worship song . No , Because a worship song is singing to , singing about . Singing praise to this is like my it's like telling a story . This is like my oh , my gosh , I can't wait to get to heaven and see Jesus . Like it's just an inerrant difference . Well , you're going to be upset a lot of people right now , I know , and I don't mean to . Umbrella of grace , umbrella of grace . I don't mean to , but there is a huge difference .

Speaker 6

But you played it not long ago .

Speaker 3

I didn't , I can assure you that I didn't play it . We had it not long ago . I would tell you right now that that song would not be on a playlist anywhere if I had it my way . And people get mad because my mom loved it and it's a great Christian song when I first started coming here it was on every week , I know .

Speaker 3

Every week . Listen , because the talent on it , because , like and it was the old 4-3 square screen , like , trust me , I made most of those videos for her because I didn't know any better .

Speaker 3

And again , 90s worship was different than current worship Like it's a different experience , and so I want to be clear about , when I'm talking about worship , what that means to me , like it's a . To me , worship isn't just about . It's an experience , it's not just a song . So when I think of worship songs , I think of songs that create experiences . Does that make sense ? Like it's something that I'm I'm giving something back to God in that moment when I'm singing Like I am , like Jyra to me . Is that powerful ? You are , jyra . I'm proclaiming who ?

Speaker 1

he is . That was one of mine .

Speaker 3

You can still use it , because it's not one of mine who wants to start . It's not going to be me . It's not going to be me .

Speaker 4

Because you know we're going on a history lesson .

Speaker 3

He's going to have five songs , but he's got the history of all five of them .

Speaker 4

I did dig up a little history , Okay .

Speaker 3

I have to go turn on the air conditioning . Are you guys freaking ?

Speaker 4

hot , it's a little warm .

Speaker 3

These headphones are stuck to my ears . I'm so hot .

Speaker 6

It's not that cool outside .

Speaker 5

It's sticky out , there it's dark in here Turn the light on Duh .

Speaker 1

Let there be light .

Speaker 5

And there it all right . Well , somebody started , well I I kind of roger , I kind of across the room I .

Speaker 5

I kind of like the the old course , I'm old yeah so I didn't have to agree . Oh sorry , nope , don't worry , roger , you got me on your side , go ahead uh , the older hymns and you know they've they've taken a lot of the older hymns and they've uh modernized yeah updated the music and , uh , you know , they all , they all tell a story . Yep and uh , I mean , that's just last week . I was going home and I was thinking about different songs and I liked , and I can only think of two now .

Speaker 3

That's that young age getting to him .

Speaker 5

I had like five or six of them .

Speaker 3

One of the things that .

Speaker 5

But I figured you could probably name my favorite five .

Speaker 3

I probably could if I thought about it long enough . But I could probably get your top ten for sure . But it wouldn't maybe be in order , it'd be hit and miss . In the Garden's definitely on that list .

Speaker 1

That was the one I was just trying to think of . In the Garden is definitely on that list .

Speaker 3

Oh geez .

Speaker 1

Old Rugged Cross .

Speaker 3

Old .

Speaker 1

Rugged Cross has to be on that list for him .

Speaker 3

I always enjoy hearing that song Okay , and here's the reason that I think you enjoy those songs .

Speaker 6

Okay , and here's the reason that I think you enjoy those songs . It's like a rock song .

Speaker 3

Oh my gosh Spirit in the Sky .

Speaker 1

He sang that for first Sunday that was Florence's .

Speaker 3

Again , another non-worship song that has made its way into the hearts of many 90s .

Speaker 6

Christians . I commend that for Sunday here after being clapped in . And then Roger sang that song and I thought I think I'm going to like this church Okay , so that song . I thought I think I'm gonna like this shirt okay , so uh that song .

Speaker 1

I'll tell you what man we , actually we .

Speaker 3

I had the band that came for florence's funeral played that song , because I was like it was ben uh smith and his wife . I said to them do you guys know spirit in the sky ? And they both laughed at me . They're like no , why would we know that song ? I'm like well , you have to learn it before the funeral because you have to play it . And they're like all right , we will it was just like two chords yeah , but it was just one of those things like it .

Speaker 3

To me , it was that send off for her , because that's what she would . She would have wanted something fun and upbeat , um , so , anyhow , uh , what else ?

Speaker 6

give me another one uh , at least give us the two that you remember I .

Speaker 3

I just gave them to you .

Speaker 5

Yeah , he just gave them . I can't think my mind's blank .

Speaker 3

There was another one that we used Precious Lord , yes , yes , I like the oldest version of that .

Speaker 5

Well , that's the one we did , yes .

Speaker 3

Yeah , precious Lord , precious Lord . I always like backup vocals on that . You usually did them precious lord , precious lord . I always like backup vocals on that . Okay , I know , uh , oh peace in the valley .

Speaker 5

I love peace . There will be peace . Yeah , yeah , we always had fun with that . Yeah , I always liked when you did so um .

Speaker 3

the reason , though , that I think that hymns were so important and that they they were written because they were words out of Scripture . It was like they were taking passages of Scripture and putting them to music , rather than modern day worship , which some of them are Like . The blessing song is Scripture . There are some that have parts and pieces of Scripture , even if they change the word slightly , but the hymns were straight out of the Bible , with melodies put to them for the most part .

Speaker 5

Pretty much . I mean , I like them all .

Speaker 3

I don't , I don't .

Speaker 3

I like most of them Do you guys remember , a couple of Sundays ago we played a song that literally everybody just stood there and stared at the screen . Blaine was running tech that day and he had picked that song and I leaned down and I said delete this song and never play it again . I did because it was just such a weird vibe . It was like you couldn't keep up with it , like you didn't know the words because it wasn't a super popular song and at the same time it had this weird downbeat to it that you just couldn't figure it out . It was really weird and we did , we deleted it that minute . It never came back .

Speaker 5

That's a good thing .

Speaker 3

Yes , it was bad , it was real bad . Also , I played a song one time . It was a Natalie Grant song , but it was a very like . Actually I didn't play it , I had put it on there because I told Alyssa , this is one I like . I would love to get the church acquainted with this song , but that's when you play during the five-minute countdown or something so they can just hear it . But it's not necessarily a like . It's not in the worship set but it's an upbeat song . It's a great opener . But she does these vocal runs where she's like that high-pitched , squealy thing like Mariah Carey does , and everybody in the church is like what is happening right now , so that one never went back on the set either . So there's some that I love that just have never made the cut and then some that I hate that always still make the cut . I also do not play Crowder . I don't like Crowder music . I like Crowder and , again , on a Christian music standpoint , love Crowder . I think how he Loves is a powerful song .

Speaker 1

You're taking all of my time .

Speaker 3

I'm sorry . I'm sorry , but I think the song is great , but for me it's hard to be a worship song because it has this—it's not congregationally written . It is hard for people to sing it and I'm cognizant of that whenever I select worship music . I'm sorry , I'm done talking . Sid of rice select worship music . I'm sorry , I'm done talking . Sit .

Speaker 1

It's your turn because I've already given most of yours yeah , so there's probably two or three that you already said , however , how he loves us . I do really like that one , I don't know , like as soon as we wait , though , top five , you have to go like , give us an order , oh geez um I , I have not written mine down , I don't even know mine see , I knew , I just put mine

Speaker 4

in my spotify .

Speaker 3

Yeah , a little sample um you want to play them for us , each one of them .

Speaker 1

I'll give you a little sample honestly , I really I think nothing else .

Speaker 2

By cody karns nothing , yeah , and I nothing that one .

Speaker 1

Yeah , yeah , thank you for that you're welcome .

Speaker 3

You didn't have it to play so I had to give it to him .

Speaker 1

I want . I believe that one kind of came out around COVID , so that was kind of , and I had a friend at the time who was trying to do what do you ? Just like not instrumentals , but Like piano music . Yeah , yeah , like he did it , and you know , there was no karaoke in fact no singing or anything he had kind of um . He played it here like that one time I asked yeah , and we had that worship here .

Speaker 1

Um , that would probably be my number one still , and then , yes , I will . I like that . Who's that one by ? Is it vertical ?

Speaker 3

um , oh , I know what you're talking about , but I couldn't get to the chorus in my brain to sing it . Yes , yes , and I think it is vertical worship , I think so , yeah , and if not , they've probably covered it at some point , because that's kind of how worship music works nowadays and then gyro .

Speaker 1

Obviously , gyro has something about like the mountaintops , doesn't it ? Or the and I that one kind of . Really . Did we hear a knock , or am I just going ?

Speaker 3

I don't know , okay , um gyra .

Speaker 1

It was kind of neat because you know how like symbolic Christian or just yeah , worship music is in general , and Chase is like why is he talking about a mountaintop ? Or what's he mean by that ? I'm like I love that man you know it's like , like when you know , it's like when you're down in your lowest .

Speaker 3

Yeah , you're down in the valley and it was just kind of like .

Speaker 1

Anytime I hear that it just reminds me of when he started , like learning worship music and realizing how spiritual and symbolic that it is .

Speaker 3

What's the one song that he really liked that I didn't have to play it for him , but there was one that he really liked that I made sure have to play it for him .

Speaker 1

But there was one that he really liked . I was asking him .

Speaker 3

Made it into the worship set Good .

Speaker 1

God Almighty .

Speaker 3

No , this is a . It's a female led song , if I'm not mistaken , it's . It feels very country .

Speaker 1

Oh yes , holy holy water right .

Speaker 3

Yes , that's exactly yes . Holy water , like it's very much so , sounds like it could be a country song and when I heard it I was like , yeah , it's a chase song .

Speaker 1

Yeah , it was like a chase he listens to the live version of that one and like the kingdom , isn't it ?

Speaker 6

yes , it is , and she .

Speaker 1

I mean , they were amazing live at atwood a few years back , but um , yeah , I don't know if I have like them in order , though , okay , I just did mine and then I liked the um , the garden into the garden , yep , um , I think that one kind of more , just like it resembles every time I've heard of it , like kind of end of life , yeah , yes , my mom , yeah , saying that it was just nice to kind of spend that time together with those loved ones . Yeah , I think that's about it .

Speaker 3

Okay .

Speaker 6

Yeah .

Speaker 3

Who's next Dawn ?

Speaker 6

you're next Listen , I have a whole page .

Speaker 3

Okay , all right . Well , okay , you can give us all of them , but you got to give us your top five , so you have to pick five of them . That's the name of the game tonight .

Speaker 5

I know , and it's not fair .

Speaker 3

It might not be , but there has to be five favorites . If you could put five of those on ?

Speaker 4

a playlist , one has to go to number one with

Favorite Worship Songs and Hymns

Speaker 4

a bullet .

Speaker 6

Yes , number one with a bullet , if you could put just five of those on a playlist that you had to listen to forever . Which five would it be ?

Speaker 2

It'd be my Christmas music . Mary , did you know ?

Speaker 4

Really , I love that story .

Speaker 6

Really .

Speaker 4

Christmas music in general , for Okay .

Speaker 6

Yep , and what Child Is this ?

Speaker 4

Those are all great .

Speaker 6

Hallelujah for Easter .

Speaker 3

Okay , I'm judging you a little bit Just a little bit over here . Because here's the thing with Mary , did you know ?

Speaker 4

Don't tell me you don't like Christmas music .

Speaker 3

It's not that I okay . First of all , I'm already in trouble at work because I'm the Grinch . At work they're putting up Christmas decorations , which I get . We have to do early because it's like and everybody else is .

Speaker 3

And every like the town is decorated for Christmas , they're getting ready to do the Christmas tree lighting . Like I get it , I get it , but somebody has to take all that crap down . Like it's so much labor . Like I look at that as just setting money on fire , I had eight people putting up Christmas decorations today . I'm like I am just burning payroll dollars , just burning payroll dollars .

Speaker 1

Like it pains me Anyhow here's my problem with Mary .

Speaker 3

Did you Know ? Can I tell you my problem ? You can . Yes , she knew . Why are we asking ?

Speaker 2

the question .

Speaker 3

The angel told her yes , she knew . Why are we singing about it ?

Speaker 1

Yes , she stinking knew .

Speaker 6

I'll give you that All right , I'll give you that as well . Everything .

Speaker 3

I mean , if he would have told her that she was giving birth to the savior of the world . I'm pretty sure she knew he was going to do some pretty cool stuff .

Speaker 6

Right , okay , it is well with my soul cool stuff . Right , I like it Is Well With my Soul .

Speaker 3

I love that song . That is a good one . Blessed Assurance . Okay , that one could have made my list . That one could have made my list . Great Is Thy Faithfulness , great is thy faithfulness Okay , modern version . Or like classic , him A classic .

Speaker 5

Okay .

Speaker 3

They have a modern version . That's pretty cool too .

Speaker 6

Yeah , I like Holy , holy , holy and that's an older one Holy , holy , holy , holy and that's wait , that's an old holy holy , not chris tomlin .

Speaker 5

No , no , okay , I don't know who sang it , we sang it at the other church , gotcha um , and then of course , I was saved in the 90s .

Speaker 6

Some 90s music .

Speaker 3

My deliverer oh , that's a good one , I I forgot about that song .

Speaker 6

I like those too , yeah .

Speaker 5

My Redeemer . I'm just thinking of that too .

Speaker 3

My Redeemer lives . Do you remember who used to sing that one ? My Redeemer , yeah .

Speaker 1

Yeah .

Speaker 3

Lexi used to sing that one all the time . Anytime somebody would give her a microphone she'd sing that song . But it was a good one .

Speaker 5

She did a really nice job , but that was a that was a popular 90s song .

Speaker 3

So then , I have some Easter music . What happened Got really off track here .

Speaker 6

All right , because he lives .

Speaker 3

Okay , Now which one ?

Speaker 5

I like the Gaithers . Okay , or Matt Marr .

Speaker 3

Okay .

Speaker 6

I like the Matt Marr version too . Yes , I like the Revelation song by Keri .

Speaker 3

Jobe , nope , now you got me out Phillips Craig and Dean or Bust , yes , phillips Craig and Dean or Bust FFH yeah . I don't mind the Keri Jobe version , but it's a little too slow for me . It's a little too slow for me . I love these debates because I love music so much that I know most of it .

Speaker 6

I like 10,000 Reasons .

Speaker 1

That's a good one . I like that one . That's a good one or so , Will I Know ? No , that one's . I think it's also called Bless the Lord .

Speaker 3

Bless the Lord . Yes , Okay , that's right .

Speaker 1

I just remember seeing the parentheses .

Speaker 5

Yes , I could go on .

Speaker 1

But what's your top ?

Speaker 3

five .

Speaker 5

I can't give you top five .

Speaker 3

I just love them all here . I am sticking to the rules and you guys are just over-breaking them . Yeah , I had to leave all these songs off the list .

Speaker 5

That's the first time you've been sticking to the rules . I know right , I got you a whole list . She does have a whole list .

Speaker 3

Goodness .

Speaker 5

Is that two-sided ?

Speaker 3

Oh my God , yeah , all right , beth , your turn .

Speaker 6

Well , my top is Mary , Did you Know ?

Speaker 3

Are you serious ? How is this happening right now ?

Speaker 6

Something about when you kiss your little baby . Did you know you're kissing the face of God ? That just brings tears to my eyes .

Speaker 3

I will tell you I love the harmonies in that song and I love the story behind the writing of that song . Yes , but the song just in general , like if I ever got to meet um , what's his name ? Mark , mark , mark , mark , marky , mark , in the funky bunch ?

Speaker 3

no , it's not , that's not it uh , mark meller , no , what's uh , he was in the gay vocal band is it lowry ? If I could ever meet him , I would ask him like did you was this a genuine question or did you know ? And you're just like , oh , this is gonna be . Like I need to understand the thought process .

Speaker 6

But anyhow , my second one is I Can Only Imagine . My third one is it Is you by the Newsboys .

Speaker 3

I don't think I know that one .

Speaker 6

It's a good one .

Speaker 3

I don't think I know that . Is it old Newsboys or new Newsboys ? Old , old , okay one , it's a good one . I don't think I know that , is it old ?

Speaker 6

old news boys or new news , boys , old , okay and then , uh , I come to the garden alone , okay . And then my last one , of course , is for you , those tears I died and that's the one that you learned before .

Speaker 3

I never knew . You never knew it , but you were like . You woke up singing the words .

Speaker 6

Because the words are you know . I'll read what I wrote down here .

Speaker 3

No , sing it for me .

Speaker 6

No , I'm not singing it . I had to sing it as I was writing it down , though it's the only way I can do it . It said you said you would be there for all of my sorrows . You said you'd be there for all of my tomorrows . I came so close to sending you away , but just like you promised , you came there to stay , and I just think about how many times in my life I did send him away .

Speaker 3

Yeah , sure , certainly .

Speaker 6

And he was there , just still waiting , waiting for me to get it all together and come to me . Yep . Or not really get it all together just to realize it .

Speaker 3

Just to realize it .

Speaker 6

yeah , I needed him to get it together .

Speaker 4

I thought Mary Did you Know was a lot older of a song it , I thought .

Speaker 2

Mary , Did you Know was a lot older of a song ?

Speaker 4

It is not . I didn't know it was from 1991 . Yeah , it's not at all . Yeah , I thought it went back further than that .

Speaker 3

Nope , no , they weren't singing that in the hymnals . Yeah , maybe the updated hymnals , the digital one . It was written in 1984 . But not produced until 91 . And that was probably because he hadn't gotten Mark , hadn't gotten any type of recording contract up to that point , like he was a music writer and a comedian much before he was singing with the Gaithers .

Speaker 1

So yeah , I forgot to say so . Will I by Hillsong ?

Speaker 3

Oh yes , what is that ? A thousand reasons or something like that 10 . Yeah , yes , something like thatand .

Speaker 1

Reasons or something like that . Ten Billion . Yeah , yeah , something like that Ten Billion or something , ten Billion , I think , something like that . Yeah , that's a good song . And then you speak . Yeah , that's a good one yeah .

Speaker 3

Yeah , that's a good modern , that's a good contemporary worship it definitely is yeah . Yeah , okay .

Speaker 6

Now you'll have to listen to it , is you ? Yeah , I will . Because I think it should be able to be a worship song . Oh gosh , now here we are .

Speaker 3

So just let's talk about Michael's not taking requests .

Speaker 4

Exactly .

Speaker 6

I was going to say , let's talk about that for a second .

Speaker 3

I don't take requests I'm putting on Sunday . He makes a set list Sunday morning . I come in and I sit down . I look at my message .

Speaker 6

I look at the songs and I will move them around , because if there's a song that I'm like , wow , that really fits with my message today .

Speaker 3

I want it in there . Most of the time they do fit perfectly . Yes , and that's my point . Like it's very intentional . He builds the set list . He's probably already got next week's set list constructed Five songs and we do it . It's worship one , worship two , worship three , worship four , worship five . So there are categories . These are the only songs you're allowed to put in one . These are the only songs you're allowed to put in two , Because it's hard to get the flow .

Speaker 3

Now sometimes we will just go straight to three , and three will be the opener and then it'll be three , three , four , five , like we'll stack it . So it's a little more worshipy versus that fun opener , because sometimes that fun opener doesn't fit the message that's coming or whatever the worship experience is that's happening .

Speaker 4

Are you too young to have made mixtapes ? No , I made mixtapes . That's an art .

Speaker 3

I had a recording studio . We lived on McConnell Street . The house that we lived in had a bathroom in the basement . Now , when I say bathroom , it was literally a toilet with a shower curtain , Like it was a box built around it , and a shower curtain . But the basement took on water so you would have to tiptoe through the water in order to get to the— . But I had— like man , we had a cassette player in there . We'd pull the curtain shut and you'd be ready to hit record . Baby , when that song comes on the radio , baby , you hit record and you miss the first 15 seconds because the DJ was talking and wouldn't shut up or they cut off .

Speaker 4

The end Yep .

Speaker 3

Yep , oh yeah .

Speaker 4

Yeah , I used to love to make mixtapes . That was an art man , that first song's gotta be Even past the mixtape .

Speaker 3

When we got to mix CDs when we were downloading from Napster and LimeWire and infesting our computers with viruses , I would like , and the quality was total garbage . It was absolutely awful . But yeah , I was always making CDs . I got to the point to where I was so good at making mixed CDs that I had a printer that could print on the top of the CD .

Speaker 1

Oh , my gosh , we were making mixed . Cds , so you didn't have like a red or green Sharpie , you had a pen .

Speaker 3

I printed those bad boys Like I bought specialty CDs . They were all white on the top and you would put them in . You could print color , you could print black and white , it didn't matter , you do whatever . And then I upgraded to one that could engrave the top of the CD .

Speaker 1

You had to engrave before you could burn the CD , though , because Did you have a name for your company ?

Speaker 3

No , it wasn't a company , it was just .

Speaker 3

I just like to mix tapes and just love doing it . You seem very official , I will bring you . So I recorded four CDs in my own house with my own stuff , like literally did all of the mixing myself , and I made four CDs that I used to sell when I would do shows . It was amazing . Yeah , I'll bring those so you can see them . And what's funny is I had completely forgotten about them until my aunt Charlene passed away . She had all four . She had the first copy of all four of those because she went everywhere with me at the time , so the first copy of all four of those she had . And when had and when she passed away , my grandma found them and gave them back to me so she had the original now I have all of those originals it's pretty

Speaker 6

cool yep any any others beth no , those were just the ones I mean so number one is mary .

Speaker 3

Did you know that's sad .

Speaker 6

I really thought you were better than that well , you know , I , I tossed and turned and I thought you know what , what that one does just bring me tears . Because of . I just think of a mom , how precious it is pregnant and just to know that you have the Lord's child . But the answer ?

Speaker 3

was . Yes , I know , but it's just the whole . And as you're holding your baby , the harmonies in that song are so good , you're looking at that baby's face and that mom looking at that baby .

Speaker 6

That first time is just that .

Speaker 3

Yeah , see , the first time I looked at my children I thought I'm never going to get any sleep . That's what I thought . You don't get it , yeah because I've never Right right right .

Speaker 4

Yeah , I think the one we have on our Christmas playlist is Kenny Rogers and Winona Judge . That's a good version . What's your beef with Kenny Rogers ? I can't have beef with Kenny Rogers .

Speaker 3

He's dead . I can't have beef with Kenny Rogers he's dead

Favorite Worship Songs and Memories

Speaker 3

.

Speaker 6

How about Oceans ? I like .

Speaker 3

Oceans . There are two versions of Oceans . Don't know if you're aware of that . There's a regular version and then there's an upbeat version . That's kind of like it feels kind of techno-y . Yeah , it's terrible , yeah , and nobody should ever play it . I don't know that one . It should be outlawed as a matter of fact . Ccli should just pull it off the shelf and they should never play it again .

Speaker 6

Ever that ? What is it ? Turner Wells , Torn Wells , I can't remember . Take it All Back . Take it All Back .

Speaker 3

I don't think I know that one . I probably would if I heard it . It's a little rappy . Oh then I definitely don't know it .

Speaker 5

Oh , I like it .

Speaker 3

No way , I like it a lot .

Speaker 1

Great Are you , lord . Great are you Lord . It's your breath . Did I already say that ? No , okay , that might be my number one . Okay , like if I was like a singer that like when she , you know , she just really gets into it . That would be a nice one If .

Speaker 3

I could pick a song that I could sing like if there was like oh , this is the one that .

Speaker 1

I want to sing .

Speaker 3

There is a song . This is going to be sound really stupid , okay , so forgive me . It's called Come as you Are and it's by a group called pocket full of rocks . Now , this is not the come as you are that we all like think of when we hear it . It's not the , I think crowder sings come as you are . It's not that song . This is a completely different song . Fantastic song . I can't sing it . It's keyed too high for me . I've tried to lower , I just can't do .

Speaker 1

What are the lyrics ?

Speaker 3

uh , I cannot sing it for you off the top of my head because it has been years . I just need the lyrics . I cannot sing it for you off the top of my head because it has been years since I've heard it .

Speaker 1

I just need the lyrics . You don't know any of the lyrics .

Speaker 3

Not off the top of my head , not that I would be confident to give them to you . Hold on , I'll look them up .

Speaker 6

I like . Are you Washed by the Blood too ? Oh ?

Speaker 3

Have you been to Jesus for the cleansing power ? I'll fly away , oh glory . Sorry , I'm not picking .

Speaker 6

We're old Michael .

Speaker 3

Listen , roger will tell you I lived on those songs for years . Like that was it .

Speaker 4

Pocket full of rocks .

Speaker 3

What was it ? Oh Come , as you Are right there . Look at that it's the number one search . Oh look , we're just going to play it Might as it . Oh Come , as you Are Right there . Look at that , it's the number one search .

Speaker 1

Oh look , we're just going to play it . Might as well play it yeah .

Speaker 3

This is a 90s song too . He's not mad at you , it's just a stellar song .

Speaker 2

And he's not disappointed .

Speaker 3

Dale sang this for me once .

Speaker 2

Really His grace is greater still .

Speaker 3

You hear that guy's voice .

Speaker 2

Then all of your wrong choices .

Speaker 4

That little Toby Keith thing . Yes , you got that vibrato .

Speaker 2

He is so mercy and he is ever kind . Here is invitation .

Speaker 3

His arms are Great song .

Speaker 6

I kind of remember that . Yeah , we used to sing that one .

Speaker 3

It's a great song it really is just generally a good song , but I can't sing it , so if there was one that I could sing , that one would be the one . See , now you need to bring up the newsboys ones . Yeah , we'll pull it up and play it on your phone . I don't have to be the dj .

Speaker 1

You are the dj . That's your job . This one was that you . You missed it . You guys were at brandon lake right this one and I was it's tear off the roof . It's tear off the roof it was benjamin the , the other boy guy um highlands . I mean , as soon as it started playing , I'm like I can't stop crying like oh my gosh , are you okay ?

Speaker 3

his voice just sounds just like a piano impressive sorry , okay , there you go , his voice just sounds just like a piano .

Speaker 2

Impressive , sorry . Okay , there you go . Wow , see how I got him Pictures had doing this . He was playing the piano and all the chorus is almost here of grace descended from the source of its supply Cause in that end of the world .

Speaker 3

That's a good song I like that Beautiful .

Speaker 1

Now , who sings that one ? Benjamin William Hastings ? Was he the one that sang before ? Before ? Yes , and then he came out with him , yep .

Speaker 6

Yep .

Speaker 1

He's got a good album .

Speaker 6

I don't know if I found the right one . Oh my gosh .

Speaker 3

She can't even DJ for herself . That is not a worship song .

Speaker 6

Just listen .

Speaker 3

Oh yeah , it's definitely 90s news voice .

Speaker 4

It's 98 degrees .

Speaker 6

That's a worship song .

Speaker 3

No , yes . No , I'm not saying it's not a good song .

Speaker 4

Savage .

Speaker 3

Garden Right .

Speaker 6

Right . Who is Savage Garden Well don't play them .

Speaker 3

Yeah , they only have like one hit . Oh yeah , all right , michael , we need to know your five you and Savage Guard .

Speaker 4

Well , don't play them .

Speaker 1

Yeah , they only have like one hit oh yeah , all right , michael , we need to know your five .

Speaker 3

It's .

Speaker 1

Nick's oh shoot .

Speaker 3

It's Nick's turn . Still , we still have both of you . Yeah , we got time . Okay , we got 15 minutes .

Speaker 6

Nick . Okay , all right , I'll learn you here .

Speaker 4

We're going , my favorite all time is .

Speaker 3

Were you there when they Crucified my Lord ? Oh , I don't know that . I know that song , but it sounds good .

Speaker 4

Johnny Cash and the Cartersons Yep .

Speaker 3

I do , know it , I do know it .

Speaker 4

I don't remember exactly when I heard that song , but the first time I heard it I was just like wow , scent chills up my spine and you know , when you think about God's voice , I think it's either going to sound like Morgan Freeman or Johnny Cash .

Speaker 3

I agree with you completely . The voice of God has got to sound like Morgan Freeman or Johnny Cash or we could throw Sam Elliott in there too . Yes , that's a possibility , Like the country version yeah that's a possibility .

Speaker 4

I'll take that we're all psychos by the way , I like the title because it's Were you there when they Crucified my Lord ?

Speaker 3

Yeah , it's a personal song .

Speaker 4

It's pretty much saying it's a personal song . You are telling everybody that you have accepted Jesus Christ , your Lord and Savior . So he's saying my Lord , just talking about Jesus , historical Jesus , he's your Lord . So I really like that the part of the song . One of the Carter sisters , anita , just an amazing haunting voice , and there's a part in the song which I'll let you listen to .

Speaker 3

Oh yeah , I love a good demo . By the way , this episode is definitely getting flagged for copyright infringement One hundred percent .

Speaker 4

One hundred percent .

Speaker 3

Yeah , one hundred percent , we're likely getting this bad boy pulled down , but we're trying and that's the thing . It'll get flagged , for sure , on YouTube it'll get flagged , but so long as we're not making money on it , they'll leave it . But we just won't be able to monetize the episode .

Speaker 4

But we don't anyway .

Speaker 3

I haven't seen a royalty check actually it's because I didn't put any on the episode . They've been sending me the royalty checks for two years . They've been sending me the royalty checks for two years I've been . You mean , you guys haven't been getting checks for 10 grand a month . What the heck .

Speaker 4

But there's a line she sings . Sometimes it causes me to tremble and the way she sings it's just pretty good .

Speaker 3

Do you have it queued up to that spot ?

Speaker 4

Well , it don't take very long to get there there we go .

Speaker 2

Oh , were you there when they crucified my Lord . Here we go .

Speaker 3

Oh sometimes it causes me to tremble , tremble , god he brings it right down .

Speaker 4

Do you know what it is ?

Speaker 3

Do you know what it is about that that sends those chills ? It's the minor key . That minor key . It's like it's eerie but it's beautiful all at the same time , especially because those girls were so tight in harmonies . Anyway , they sing a four-part harmony in that and it's just like .

Speaker 5

Did you ever ? Did you ever hear tennessee or any ford's version of that ?

Speaker 4

no , that's pretty good pretty good too . Yeah , but that song uh , first came out in an african american hymnal in 1899 , so most likely it was it was sung in the slave field , which , yes , you can when you hear it yeah , definitely feel , you definitely feel that that song's coming right to me . I always say those songs come right up out of the earth .

Speaker 3

Yep .

Speaker 4

What those people are going through and they're not singing it for attention , attention , money , uh you know they're singing it because almost for survival yeah , what they're going through , what they're going through and you can hear it in the sound , the lyrics , um so I just think it's beautiful .

Speaker 4

Like I said , johnny cash's voice and and anita's voice , just uh , it's almost haunting in a way . It puts you , puts you right in the moment . But I've just always loved that song . It's just , I think it's fantastic . Number two we'll go , we'll get modern . I like how Can it Be ? By Lauren Daigle .

Speaker 3

I love Lauren Daigle . Oh , I love that song .

Speaker 4

I think I've been there with the lyrics to that song . You know I've been there a time or two , so identify with that song and I really think that song . You know I've been there a time or two , so identify with that song and I really think that song . It's almost like an anthem . You know , she really takes off in that song . I've always loved her voice , um , but certainly it's just one of those songs of you know , always coming back to the lord , no matter how inadequate you feel .

Speaker 4

Um , it's almost that um achievement or victory of being able to go back to him . And you can hear it in the song how I think .

Speaker 4

I think in the way that it builds , in the way that it ends , I mean it really builds up yeah and to me it's almost like if I , you know , if I had to uh gosh , I don't know how to explain it like if I had to like uh , what do they call that ? When you uh . Well , when pitchers like go out on the ball field and stuff , like if I had to enter a building .

Speaker 1

Oh yeah .

Speaker 3

Any song that might be a walk . Yeah , you're not coming out to eye of the tiger . You're coming out If I had to pick a Christian song .

Speaker 1

what if we all have like a walk-in song to heaven ?

Speaker 3

Oh , that would be cool , like our anthem place where we get bump , bump , bump , bump . Fog machines go off , strobe lights , yeah , yeah , I want to go to heaven . Real bad now , yeah .

Speaker 2

I want to rock .

Speaker 4

Well , that went down a dark path . I think you took that a bit too far path . You got your point across . Yeah , that's my walk into heaven song there we go . And that whole album I think Is fantastic .

Speaker 3

We're not getting passes , I'm going to have a hard time recovering , because now I'm trying to figure out what mine is . No I don't think no , that's not . This is a worship song .

Speaker 1

That's not my enter into heaven song , but with your enter into heaven song , would it have to be a worship song or could it be a Christian song ?

Speaker 3

I would think it could be a Christian song . I don't think it matters at that point . Yeah , because , especially Because now I'm like visualizing like strobe lights and like fog machines and like I'm thinking like dramatic . You know what I mean . So like my mind is lost at this point , Please move on before I get way out of here .

Speaker 4

So number two . How can it be Number three ? We're going way back to 1927 . It was Blind Willie Johnson . Oh geez , it's an old blues song . It's called Dark Was the Night , cold Was the Ground .

Speaker 6

Don't know it .

Speaker 4

And it's a very haunting blues song . He's basically just playing sly guitar and moaning through it . Okay , but the song is all about the crucifixion .

Speaker 3

Does he actually sing ?

Speaker 4

words no , I don't think you can discern one word that he sings , but he was known to have um traveled in the south and he has a lot of songs . He does are are um I need gospel .

Speaker 3

I need to clarify , though . So this somehow made it on your list , but he doesn't say any words .

Speaker 4

No , okay I'm curious to hear this one . To me it's the way it sounds and the way it feels . Again , it's another song that I'm sure was a hymnal that came out of the slave song .

Speaker 4

So you can hear it just coming up out of the ground and it just reminds me that it doesn't matter what language we speak , how we communicate , what language we speak , how we communicate , his word can be brought forth from anything , from any sound or emotion that we can make as human beings . His word is there , whether we can discern it lyrically or not . It's there , it's in the emotion , it's in our soul and I think you can hear it in that song . But , like I said , he traveled to South and he played blues and he mostly played gospel-tinged songs and that was almost kind of like his mission , that he went around , he played these songs and in the 20s there were certain people that they wanted to start capturing some of this music . So they would travel South to find these blues players and record their music . And it just so happens that they found him , recorded him and he only recorded a handful of songs , I believe , but for the most part they're all gospel-tinged songs and that's kind of like his small legacy

Exploring Gospel Music Influence

Speaker 4

.

Speaker 4

This song has been in a lot of movies . I know it was in Walk the Line at one point . There's a little snippet of it . I think it's been in some other big movies , I forget which ones it was .

Speaker 3

Listen , stop building the anticipation . Play the song Nick .

Speaker 2

Geez .

Speaker 4

All right , here we go .

Speaker 3

Oh , I remember it .

Speaker 4

And again , this was not recorded for commercial purposes , just playing it , it's just picking and singing . To me this is like meditation , Right , right . If you can discern any word in there , let me know .

Speaker 3

Listen closely .

Speaker 1

It sounded like I'll fly away .

Speaker 3

I'm actually more obsessed with the thought that you can hear chickens in the background . I know that sounds weird , but if you listen really , really closely , like this is to me what I picture . He's legitimately sitting outside playing this , just kind of like in his own world . Stuff's going on around him . He has no idea that it's happening .

Speaker 5

You know what I visualize . I visualize the field workers either going to the field or going back to their houses .

Speaker 3

I'm going to assume that he's African-American . So I'm picturing skinny black man , bib overalls , sitting on a wash tub just playing that guitar . And again , nobody in the world is even like people everywhere . But he doesn't even realize it because he's just in his own world just creating this . I don't want to call it almost like a plea , that's what it feels like to me . It's this really raw , emotional here . I am Lord .

Speaker 4

And this song was actually chosen to be sent into space .

Speaker 3

Really .

Speaker 4

I believe in 1977 , as part of a set of songs that more or less we would leave behind .

Speaker 3

The aliens got a hold of that and went . What the heck ?

Speaker 4

So if somebody wanted to study the human race , these would be the songs that were chosen .

Speaker 3

They'd be really confused on this one , yeah . Maybe that's why they were chosen , they'd be really confused on this one .

Speaker 1

Yeah , Maybe that's why they did it . They get Elvis , the Beatles and that .

Speaker 4

So yeah , like I said , I could listen to that all day . Okay , so that's number three . Okay so number four , a fairly well-known song . It's a big song .

Speaker 2

What a Beautiful Name .

Speaker 3

What a Beautiful Name song .

Speaker 4

It's a big song . What a Beautiful Name , beautiful Name . It's the greatest song . It's huge . It's the greatest song . It's huge , played everywhere . Might even be the best song . When Margie and I started coming to this church , that was probably her favorite song . I know it was a big song here at the time . It was so important to her that that is the song that she walked down the aisle to when we got married .

Speaker 3

That story is the best story ever . Oh yeah , you want to tell that At some point . We need to tell that story . You guys don't know that one , do you ? Oh , my Lord , have mercy . I'll tell you what you want to get beat by a woman of God .

Speaker 4

I almost got beat . You think Florence was pleased . No , no , no , no , no , no yeah she walked down the aisle to that song . So it's dear to my heart anyway , and I think it's a fantastic song . I mean I really do . He almost couldn't remember his name . Yeah , um , but we really don't play that one anymore do we ?

Speaker 3

no , it's so huge , it's so huge it's the same with um good , good father . You don't hear that one a lot anymore , but there was so long of a period that we played almost every sunday yeah almost every sunday , because twice yes when we first it .

Speaker 3

This is not a joke . When we sang worship , when Florence was here and I was leading worship , we would practice music and we would come in on Sunday morning , we'd run the set list and we'd work on some new stuff . You knew you had to be done by the time she walked in the building , because if you were singing a song that she's like oh , I like that song , she would say put that one in the list for this morning . And we don't know it . Like we haven't put slides together , we haven't done anything . And she's like no , I want you to do that one . That was good , good father . Yeah , we didn't know it . Like we knew the words and we were like there were a couple of spots that were rough . And she walked in one morning and we were singing it and she stopped at her seat . She stood there quietly and listened and I said , no , we're just , we just started working on it .

Speaker 3

And she said , yeah , put that one on the list this morning . And we did it . Not well , but we did it not once but twice , cause she would . She had this thing and for those of you who can't see me , she would spin her finger . So , like her and I would make eye contact and she would do this . And that meant keep going . And we did tracks , so it wasn't like you just keep going , the track stops , it starts again and you start the song . It was so uncomfortable , but she was just , she loved the song and that was what it was .

Speaker 1

Now , Alyssa does not like that song , correct ?

Speaker 3

I don't know .

Speaker 1

I thought you I could have swore you said Good , good Father is one she does not like . Well , I think it . I mean , I'm kind of the same way with it .

Speaker 2

We're so over it yeah .

Speaker 3

And again I get the passion behind the song . I don't think the anointing is gone . My love for the song has been burnt out .

Speaker 1

Have you guys ever set your alarm clock to a song ?

Speaker 3

No .

Speaker 1

Don't do it , especially to a song that you like , because you will grow to hate it . I'm to a song that you like because you will grow to hate it . I'm like , nah , impossible , no , I did , and it's true . So that's kind of what it reminds me of , like you play it too much and then so yeah yeah , mine goes off to a song every day it

Speaker 4

wasn't intentional , but it's want to be starting something by michael jackson oh , it was like on an 80s playlist but it plays out every day . Well , it makes sense want to be starting something .

Speaker 3

We're starting today I thought for starting something we're starting today . I thought for a second no , I'm not going to lie . I thought for a second he was going to say wannabe by the Spice Girls .

Speaker 2

And I was like wait a second , nick .

Speaker 3

I was like Nick , we got to talk . Buddy , start tomorrow morning .

Speaker 4

Getting back to what a beautiful name , I learned that one criticism from a lot of pastors was the line of he didn't want heaven without us . So and they said well , like jesus isn't . Jesus isn't needy , he doesn't need us , he has everything but he needs .

Speaker 3

That's not why he was doing like well they're , you're totally misconstrued . Yeah , the design , though , for heaven , the design for the death on the cross , was so that we would be , right , yeah but ,

Speaker 4

I guess there was a lot of criticism from pastors saying that they didn't appreciate that .

Speaker 3

But they don't criticize any of the other crap that goes on in the church .

Speaker 4

Interesting , that's one thing I learned by studying up on that song , number five , number five there will be peace in the valley Elvis .

Speaker 3

Presley .

Speaker 5

Alright , good choice .

Speaker 4

Probably the first gospel song that I fell in love with . Yeah , and that's all thanks to listening to Elvis and just , and I didn't realize until I was studying for this that that is on the Christmas album .

Speaker 3

That is correct . That is correct . Didn't make it to a gospel album until much later . They forced out a Christmas album early on . They didn't have enough music to fill it , so they put that one in Mama Like the Roses . Have you guys ever heard that song ? If you ever get the chance , skip it . It's terrible , but I do sing it every year in my Christmas show .

Speaker 4

As you know , he sang that on his third and final appearance on the Ed Sullivan show and they didn't want him to do it . And he said well , I promised my mama I would sing it for her and I'm going to sing it . And he said something . He was inspired by something else some kind of conflict between Russia and Hungary and it inspired him to want to perform that song . And he basically said I'm doing it . If I don't do it , I'm not doing the show . So Ed Sullivan said okay , you can do it show . So ed sullivan said okay , you can do it . And I think that's a pretty cool thing for a rock and roll singer in 1957 to go on to go on tv and do a gospel number but it was so common back then .

Speaker 3

Back then a lot of them oh yeah , I mean every country artist yeah , a lot of yeah , a lot of , and I don't want to say elvis was really the first of his kind , right ? So when they were looking at , like , what do we record next ? Everybody , everybody had a Christmas album , everybody had a gospel album , and so it was natural for him to record one because it fit the mold . But it didn't fit the mold of Elvis that everybody expected Do you know what I mean .

Speaker 3

Like you'd come to expect rockabilly music , that's all right , blue suede shoes , things like that .

Speaker 4

So yeah , that mom's favorite song and for me that song , I think at the time because when I first started listening to elvis I think I was when I seriously got into his music um , I was probably getting right into high school , I think . So eighth , ninth grade , and for some of the things that are going on in my life I for some I already felt old . So when he would say I'm so tired and so weary , it's like I got it yeah , I feel it , man .

Speaker 4

Yeah , like I know where I'm in eighth grade and I get it yeah yeah , so I just identified with that right away and I just loved his uh performance of that song . I thought his his vocal performance on that was so tip top .

Speaker 3

Just a fun little fact about that it was recorded for the ed sullivan show , like obviously while he was on there . So you've got that version and there's only other one other version that exists of that song other than the other cuts when they were recording it . He didn't record it later in life for other albums . If you listen to any of his , any of his pop music , any of his rock music , you've got suspicious minds burn in love . All of those big like hits , those all had multiple like he would do them on different albums and such . That was the only take that he like he only ever did it in one album . It was never re-recorded . So that's kind of like that raw , like this is Elvis at his finest . You really didn't get much different than that . And did you know the only Grammys he ever won were for his gospel music . Never won a Grammy for anything other than gospel music . Fun fact there my turn .

Speaker 3

Your turn All right , I have to run through these because we've got to wrap up pretty soon . So number five Elvis , of course . How many of you have watched most of the Elvis movies ? I didn't figure anybody in the room was going to agree with him His movies .

Speaker 4

His movies . I've watched most of the early ones . We're getting to the late .

Speaker 3

Okay , so this is the late one . So have you ever seen the Trouble with Girls ?

Speaker 5

No , yeah , 20 years

Favorite Gospel Music and Memories

Speaker 5

ago . Okay , so the premise of this , movie Five cents .

Speaker 3

The premise of this movie is he is the leader of a traveling carnival . He's kind of the boss man of this traveling carnival . I thought that was Roundabout , no Roustabout is what you were thinking of .

Speaker 2

Did I say roundabout ? Yes ?

Speaker 3

No , that's the thing we hate , we hate roundabouts .

Speaker 3

Don't get us started . Don't get us started . Got my blood pressures up now . So this was a like . It came in on a train and they called it the Chautauqua . Okay , I don't know what that means , but it was a really great movie . The girl who voiced Velma in Scooby-D do played alongside him in this movie . The Chautauqua comes to town . There's this guy who beats a lady and they find him dead . It's a whole thing . They're trying to figure out who the person is that did it . It's not like a whodunit , but it kind of feels that way . And at one point all of the gospel singers who are supposed to be in one of the tents that night get sick . And Elvis comes out on stage and he sings a song called swing down , sweet chariot . Oh yeah , it is , hands down , favorite elvis gospels . One of my favorite elvis gospel songs . I won't say my favorite , but I like that version , not the studio recorded version , because it's just him clapping with the jordan airs behind him . Phenomenal four-part harmonies , top notch . Okay , that's number five , number four another Elvis song .

Speaker 4

Hold on hold on . Is this it ?

Speaker 3

That's the studio version . Still a wonderful song .

Speaker 4

I like it too .

Speaker 3

Wonderful song .

Speaker 4

So the version you're talking about just has his voice .

Speaker 3

Yeah , well , I think there might be some piano , but it's nothing like that . It's not produced , it's very raw .

Speaker 6

See if you can find the movie version . I don't see it . I like the Gaithers singing that one .

Speaker 3

I've never heard the Gaithers sing it . When it comes on , it's got to be Elvis .

Speaker 4

Johnny Cash sang that too .

Speaker 3

Oh , I meant to tell you real quick . Do you remember ? I Was there when it Happened by Johnny Cash .

Speaker 4

Oh yeah , that's a good one too .

Speaker 3

It can't make my top five . I loved that one too .

Speaker 4

Yeah , it was a good one .

Speaker 3

So that's number five . Number four another Elvis song . I John Obsessed with that one right now , but not the Elvis version that everybody has come to know . They did a remix on all of his gospel music on an album called no One Stands Alone and Lisa Marie re-recorded no One Stands Alone as a duet with Elvis on that album Super cool duet . But the I John version that they put on there super fun , really upbeat . It's a blast . It's one of my favorites . Number four , number three Thirst For you , but not the CeCe Winans version . It can't be CeCe Winans . If we're going to listen to Thirst For you , it has to be the Awak band or bust . Good luck finding it , unless you know where it's hidden on youtube with a link that I have so , listen , I don't know how this ever came to pass problem with the rights or something ?

Speaker 3

well , I don't you , I can't even find the awakening band . So here's what happened back when florence was alive . Nick kearns was here , he and jeff , and he and I did a lot of the like . We created the videos for Florence and he had the CD for the awakening band and we loved that song . So we made a lyric video for that song . But it's a four , three square video and I'm obsessed with that version . No other version except for that one . It's amazing and it's not far off . Isn't that the one we did ? I played it the other sunday . I played it a few sundays ago because I went back during communion , actually .

Speaker 6

So it'd been last last sunday yeah , I was in nursery , so yeah yeah .

Speaker 3

So I like I went back and I found it for him and I was like this is the one play , nothing else . Okay , so that's number three . Number two another Elvis song . Anybody got a guess ? Oh , come on how . Great , thou Art , you got it how Great Thou Art , but only the live version with the double ending . I love it . I'm obsessed with it .

Speaker 4

What album is that from ?

Speaker 3

I don't actually know where it would have been on albums . I mean the live version .

Speaker 3

Yeah that's what I'm saying . What album it would have been . On albums it was , I mean the live version . Yeah , that's what I'm saying . Like what album they would have put that on . It would have been later Vegas stuff , so probably been 74 ish . So somewhere in that era , somewhere in that that year , I would guess my number one song If for anybody who can't guess this one , you must live under a rock is thank you , Lord Don Moen . That's just like , like it always will be it'll . I'll never . I don't think I'll ever outgrow it . Even when it plays here on sunday mornings it's still like there's an emotional attachment to that oh yeah yeah , um , you took my sickness and healed all my pain .

Speaker 3

Um , you took my sorrow . I mean , there's just so many lines in that that are powerful that I just love . But then I really love the key change in that song . So , from from a musical standpoint , the key change is my favorite part , but I love the words . Yeah , that's my top five here . Do you guys want me to play Thirst for you real quick ? Let's see if I can find it . Sure .

Speaker 2

Let's see .

Speaker 5

We're going to start bringing that coffee pot down here .

Speaker 3

I know , because I was thinking I'm dry man , I'm dry , I've got to find YouTube . It's so funny because I've always like I hid this link on YouTube so that it would always be there .

Speaker 5

And now you can't find it .

Speaker 3

No , I know exactly how to find it . How do you find YouTube Right there it is . Yeah , Roger , what's YouTube ? What's the YouTube ?

Speaker 5

Is that like the TV , it won't open . Evidently you're not supposed to play it .

Speaker 3

Apparently not Probably copyright reasons again . Yeah , there you go . That's weird because they found oh , there it is .

Speaker 5

I knew supposed to play it Apparently not Probably copyright reasons again .

Speaker 3

Yeah , there you go . That's weird because I found oh , there it is . I knew I'd find it . Candy Crush . Hold on , I've got to get through my ads . It's funny .

Speaker 4

We're running ads now .

Speaker 3

Yes , this message is brought to you by Candy Crush . Let's skip this . Something about this song .

Speaker 1

I've always liked this song and it's probably because she always played it it was Communion . This was our .

Speaker 3

Communion song . So this was kind of one that I grew attached to . You can't go out and find the Awakening . If you Google them , you find music , but not that song . I don't know why . I don't know whatever happened to it , but anyhow , maybe CeCe Wine and sued them and so it doesn't exist anywhere , except for right there on that one video .

Speaker 4

So we got time to tell the story real quick . We might as well , because because I mean , we're already over time okay , so nick and margie are getting married .

Speaker 3

I'm kind of the tech guy at the church now and , like dan , was running sound , but when there was extracurricular stuff , usually I was the guy that would come and take care of it . So margie asked me to play music at the wedding , at the during the service , and I agreed . She told me when rehearsal was . However , I forgot .

Speaker 3

So she called me to remind me and she said hey , we're at the church , are you coming ? And I yell oh F really loud into the phone , not knowing I was on speakerphone and Florence was standing right next to her and I could have died . I came in the building with my tail tucked between my legs , like I was .

Speaker 3

I was horrified . And you know what's funny ? She never said anything to me , like because she I knew that she knew and that was bad enough , like there was nothing she could have said to like make me feel worse than how .

Speaker 6

I already felt and at the time .

Speaker 3

I mean , I was fairly a fairly new Christian at the time , so there wasn't like a lot of like . It was like there was no buffer at that point . There still really isn't , but there was really no buffer at that point . It just flew out the trap and yeah . I had completely forgotten about that story until Margie reminded me several years ago . She was like do you remember ? And I was like oh my gosh , I didn't until you reminded me . Could you let that one die please ?

Speaker 1

what year did you guys get married ?

Speaker 3

wow , that's terrible 2018 .

Speaker 4

I was thinking like 2016 to Wow .

Speaker 3

that's terrible 2018 .

Speaker 1

Okay , yeah . Yeah , I was thinking like 2016 to 19, . Somewhere around there .

Speaker 3

Crazy stuff Huh .

Speaker 4

Yeah , because it was six years this year , so yeah , 2018 .

Speaker 1

Yeah , margie , he knew . See , he knew I had to test him .

Speaker 4

Well , once you go like 2020 to 2024 , you can track but once you're going back to the teens .

Speaker 3

then you're like oh , yeah , yeah , math gets hard , it's hard now .

Speaker 1

Math ain't math yeah the math ain't math .

Memorable Dates and Prayers

Speaker 3

I always tell my wife when we talk about our anniversary , like we got married on February 12th . That was not intentional for any reason other than it happened to be the day that worked Right . But it's nice for me Valentine's Day , so I know two days before .

Speaker 4

Valentine's Day . We got an anniversary coming up .

Speaker 3

If you asked me the year that we got married .

Speaker 4

Just say it's Lincoln's birthday Is that Lincoln's birthday , february 12th .

Speaker 2

Yeah , I didn't know , that Now I know You'll never forget it again .

Speaker 3

The more you know . Alyssa was born on August 15th , which is the day before Elvis passed away , so that's kind of my I do that with people .

Speaker 4

That's how I never forget her birthday . Maggie's birthday is April 14th , so I know that's the day Lincoln was assassinated , see .

Speaker 1

And it's the day before Tax Day .

Speaker 4

Nah , that doesn't matter .

Speaker 1

Well , Cooper's induction date was the 15th . I didn't have him then , oh goodness .

Speaker 3

Okay , anything else . Any other fun stories ?

Speaker 2

Nope .

Speaker 3

Pastor Roger , you want to pray for us ?

Speaker 5

Oh , heavenly Father , we do thank you , lord , for this day . Lord , we thank you for the fun that we can have here , lord , at this table . Lord , just to talk about you , to talk about the things that you do for us , Lord , the things that other Christians have written down , lord , that just remind us of you , lord , we just thank you for that , lord . Lord , we just ask you to take and be with each person , lord , as they leave this table . Lord , let them have a safe travel home , lord , and just have a blessed week . Lord , we just thank you and praise you and we give you all the glory , amen .

Speaker 6

Amen .
